is an artist working in music, theater, and performance. Their research is concerned with historical absurdities, manufactured scarcities, and contrary negritudes.

Askew’s solo performance SLAMDANCE garage was hailed by 3Views as “completely, brilliantly alive” and “theater at its best: a provocation to act.” Developed at The Performing Garage and Peabody Essex Museum before premiering at the Bushwick Starr, SLAMDANCE garage is part of an iterative series on punk and blackness which includes SLAMDANCE TV, presented by The Kitchen, and upcoming iterations SLAMDANCE punk lessons and SLAMDANCE pit simulator. Other recent projects include In The Space Between (The Theater Offensive), Unnamed Leagues (Peabody Essex Museum), and Until Other Times (JACK).

As a musician and sound artist, Askew has created scores for installations and performances by Christopher Myers, Kaneza Schaal, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Joie Lee, James Gibbel, and Kamal Nassif. They co-sound designed and performed in KLII (Walker Art Center, REDCAT, Chelsea Factory), and have provided drums and voice for performances by Diana Oh, Justin Allen, and Bri Frei. Recently, Askew was a featured musician and co-producer on ROBESON, the solo debut of celebrated singer Davóne Tines, released by Nonesuch Records.

Askew was born in Boston, MA; raised in Takoma Park, MD; and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, where they are a member of the Pioneers Go East Collective’s NEXT! Mentorship Program. They hold a dual-degree in Theater, Dance, & Media and History & Literature from Harvard University.
